Electric Ecology
Renewable power and water
We live in an electric universe, even
our
thoughts have a charge - no wonder we use electricity for everything!
Whether it's solar or wind, nuclear or coal,
it all ends up as electricity... with the exception of ecological
engines (natural sun driven system found in nature).

Ecology
The Interconnectedness
The
evolving awakening and reflection of people on itself and ecology;
our history, present and future. Honesty, trust, feelings. A deep truth
is unfolding, terror is manipulating us to feel the un-felt
emotions
buried for good reason, at the time, survival - yet but to
survive now
we must remember what we saw in the mirror and who we are because the
secret of evolution is found there.

Better decisions
start from better
visions,
and
such visions need ecological perspectives. Future Ecology looks back
from the past and into the future giving us answers we need today. Dare

Soil
Carbon Sequestration
Could
Renewable Soil Carbon Sequestration be
the secret weapon the world is looking for? Look at the soil,
is it healthy moist and rich, or is it dry cracked and sandy? Planting
native plants will help restore the soil, for they are used to dry
conditions - and get the real dirt on the 100's of billions of microbes
that
support our life systems and their relationship with worms.

We are living on a carbon planet in a
carbon cycle experiencing global warming.
Why are we heating up? Are we heating up? What don't we get?
Put the CO2 back in the ground where it belongs with modern farming
practices and soil management.
|

IS
CO2 POLLUTION?
OR IS THERE 2 MUCH CO2?
I have to admit - the weatherman seems to be getting better with his
predictions - and the weather
isn't like it used to be (outside my window) in Sydney January 2008.
It would appear the
climate has changed.
The cause of this is purportedly man-made because we are burning coal
and oil and
polluting the planet increasing CO2 levels feeding the greenhouse and
trapping the suns heat. That what the global weathermen tell you,
that's the essentially the message.
I don't know if we are warmer - in
fact we didn't have a summer this year, January 2008, very mild,
(lovely in Sydney) -
the climate has certainly changed for us in Sydney.
We
are told
excess CO2 is the cause of global
warming. There's too much pollution!! Pollution is driving global warming -
there's too much
CO2!!
The real essense
of the message is being obscured or blurred with the inference of
polution and it's not.
It wasn't pollution
before... what's changed? Quite
simply we have... more!
CO2 is still part of the carbon
cycle -
there's just more now. And the opposite is true, not enough CO2,
and we would be cold.
A comfortable temperature is found with the right amount of CO2
level... but once again, the
answer is we have more
than before... so we are warming.
CO2 acts as a
blanket and traps the suns heat within the
atmosphere - with more CO2 the blanket is thicker trapping more heat
than usual - again we have more
CO2.
|
Whether CO2 is
pollution or not,
the blurr shifts your focus away from the carbon cycle.
But once you see global warming through the eyes of the carbon cycle,
carbon sequestration will take on a new light and predictably herald in
the 21st Century Gold Rush.

WE
ARE LIVING IN A CARBON CYCLE!
But
what has actually changed?
We
breath in oxygen and breath out CO2. All animals do - and plants breath
in
CO2 and expel air - so we can breath. It's a cycle. CO2 is part of the
cycle of life - and it still is. Next time you hear news about how CO2
is pollution, you know it's nothing of the sort, it's an
essential
part of our lives... it's just that there's more.
Don't get me wrong, too much CO2 will kill you, but so will too much
oxygen or water... but the excess CO2 in the atmosphere will not kill
you. It is just going to warm the planet because it's stuck up there
amplifying the greenhouse effect because it has no other place to go.
Normally it would flow along to wherever it usually goes - but no it's
just hanging around up there causing warming.
But where does it usually go?
CO2 is
heavier than air,
that's why it sinks to the
surface of the
planet - right down to the *ground - where it is transformed with the
help of light and photosynthesis
into plants
trees shrubs soil seaweed algae and just about everything - we are
living carbon on a living carbon planet factory. Trees grow big, die, return to the
earth, get carbon crushed over millions of years and becomes
gases coals, oils and diamonds - it's all carbon.
|
Because soil relies on chemicals
derived from oil to grow the crops that we eat - when the oil runs out
- so does the food.

SOIL
MANAGEMENT
There's too much CO2 in the atmosphere
and it's causing the planet to warm.
As
with all systems
we must keep
clear the passage
of travel - the
heart pumps blood, but the arteries and veins
need to be clear to allow the passage of blood to flow - any blockage
and the body breaks down.
The same
applies to
the planet - the planet's carbon heart
pumps carbon from gas to liquid to solid - we dig it up, burn it and
release the energy - and the gas - again - that's why there's more gas - and
to work properly - to flow - the passage
for CO2 needs to
be clear. Otherwise we have a build up of CO2 in the atmosphere - just
hanging around because it has no other place to go - the sea is full -
the sky is full - the ocean is difficult - and the ground is dry.
Any electrical
engineer or school kid interested in electronics could guess, when
there's too much heat generated by the circuit... "What we
need is a heat sink", and they'd be right!
The soil is usually a heat sink - and it's essential that we understand
that
soil
has changed: to see the possibility that if man made the soil poor,
then man can make the soil rich again.
That's what is
different.
That's what has changed.
Farming soil is different now than at any other time and mismanagement
of grazing lands have left soils depleted. Farming and mismanagement of
soils'
role in the cycle
of carbon - essentially, has been reversed. Soil has since millenium
been a carbon sequester -
breathing in carbon and burying it to become
coal or oil - but now it has become a carbon emitter - farming soil is
dependant upon chemical subsidy and can be more nutrient rich than the
soil - but it's
reversible, because it's man made, it can be un-man made.
As
the world marvels at the pace China is moving, China sets the example
of what is achievable. All we need is the attitude of China.
Fix the
soil and we fix (or temporarily fix) global warming (because soil also
has a
limit to how much CO2 it can hold) but soil can
re-balance the system and cool the planet -
and that's it in a nutshell.
|
Using soil as a carbon sink is a win win because we can produce more
food and cool the globe, and this will buy the time needed while we
changover to renewable energy.
|
*But
because the ground isn't accepting CO2 right now - it rejects the CO2
trying to nest and the CO2 has to hang around waiting for some decent
soil to flow into.
|
THE GREENING OF THE PLANET
So, I
ask. We all agree we have too much CO2 in the atmosphere but is this
caused by the burning of fossil fuels or do we have
a
blockage in the carbon cycle? It all equates to too much CO2 and comes
with the same consequence of
global warming but which is it?
The answer is both.
The good
news is if we
restore soil to it's natural healthy state on a global scale with soil
management, soil
would absorb all the excess CO2, plants would thrive and be able to
grow more
food, and all that greening will cool the
globe... and importantly we will buy the time to changover
to renewables.

Increased Photosynthetic Capacity
Reverses
Global Warming
"Decreased
soil carbon levels have been recorded worldwide under most current
broadacre cropping and grazing regimes. This soil carbon has been
emitted to the atmosphere.
It
is sobering to compare the CO2 emissions from soil with those from the
burning of fossil fuels. Dr Rattan Lal, Professor of Soil Science at
Ohio State University and Director, Carbon Management and Sequestration
Center, USA, has calculated that 476 Gt
of carbon has been emitted from farmland soils due to inappropriate
farming and grazing practices, compared with 270
Gt
emitted from over 150 years of burning of fossil fuels.
These
trends can be reversed by increasing the photosynthetic capacity of the
landscape through the adoption of Yearlong Green Farming (YGF)
techniques."

"Actions
that improve soil and
water quality, enhance agronomic productivity and reduce net emissions
of greenhouse gases are truly a win-win situation. It is true that soil
C sequestration is a short-term solution to the problem of gaseous
emissions. In the long term, reducing emissions from the burning of
fossil fuels by developing alternative energy sources is the only
solution. For the next 50 years, however, soil C sequestration is a
very cost-effective option, a “bridge to the future” that buys us time
in which to develop those alternative energy options."
